RISSB was established in October 2003 as the Code Management Company. In 2007, it changed to the Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB). RISSB develops and manages a suite of documents for the Rail Industry which are categorised as the Australian Code of Practice (the ACOP). The ACOP consists of four different types of documents. These are: (a) Standards – Australian Standards for rolling stock, infrastructure (including electrical), train control systems, safety, and operations’ (b) Codes of Practice – Practical information on how to achieve compliance with stated requirements contained in standards and legislation; (c) Rules and Procedures – safe working rules and procedures for national application; and (d) Guidelines/Handbooks – Informative and advisory guidance material on a range of subjects but not necessarily linked to formal requirements. RISSB is accredited by Standards Australia as one of its Standards Development Organisations. RISSB is co-funded by Australian Governments and the Rail Industry. RISSB’s vision is to engage the Rail Industry and Government to achieve industry wide harmonisation through: Developing Standards, Codes, Rules and Guidelines; Pursuing interoperability initiatives; Promoting common technologies; Harmonising Rail Industry practices and Promoting the adoption of RISSB products.
